Charles Russell "Charlie" Mutter, Sr
Birth: Jun. 17, 1942
Ross County
Ohio, USA
Death: Jan. 5, 2006
Montgomery County
Maryland, USA

Charlie Mutter, known among his daughter's kin as Pop Mutter, was the son of John H. Mutter Sr. (b 3-1900) and Bessie McGlothin Mutter (b 4-10-1906, d 8-1986). His siblings included: Mary L. Mutter, Martha Mutter, Frank Mutter, William Mutter (b 2-18-1934, d 2-16-1975), Jack Mutter, John H. Mutter Jr (d 8-24-2008), Burt Mutter, William Burke "Buck" Mutter, Elton Mutter, Stanley Mutter, and Raymond Mutter. He was an extremely hard working, friendly, easy going man who worked steel, construction, operated a giant crane and drove across country tractor trailers. I was told that his skill with a giant crane was so good, he could startle idle construction workers by removing their hard hats with his crane bucket. He began working at age 14 and continued working until cancer robbed him of his strength and health near the end of his life. He never had a chance to enjoy the retirement that a lifetime of hard labor should have earned. From his first wife, Rebecca Fillinger (b 10-25-1946, d 7-12-1994), he had one daughter, Susan M. Mutter. From his second wife, Carol, he had one son, Charles R. "Chuckie" Mutter Jr (b 5-14-1974). He was extremely proud of both children, and often discussed his daughter's achievements in FFA and his son's achievements in wrestling and weight lifting. He also had two stepsons from Carol whom he proudly introduced to others as his sons. Charlie made an outstanding Grandfather and was a favorite among his grandchildren. Chuck's 2 boys and Susan's son were crazy about Pawpaw Mutter. His grandson, Caleb, often looked forward to Pop Mutter's trips to Florida in his semi, and was always treated to a ride in the semi from Palatka to Hastings. If there was no traffic on 207, Pop Mutter often let Caleb operate the air horn, and he always kept his promises to Caleb to come back and see him on his next trip. After inprocessing at Ft Benning for a combat tour in 2005, Susan called me and told me that Pop Mutter had been diagnosed with cancer and was not expected to last but 3 to 6 months, leaving me the sad impression that he would pass away while I was overseas. When my tour was winding down in October 2005, Susan contacted me and told me to be ready for a trip to Chevy Chase, Maryland, Pop Mutter was still alive, and it was important to get up there to see him. We did manage to get to Maryland and see him again after I was lucky enough to return home alive, and it was a very sad time. Pop Mutter was very weak, and had declined any further radiation or chemo. I tried to talk him into resuming treatment, but he indicated he was tired of being sick and simply wanted to spend his remaining time around family instead of stretching out the inevitable with no real quality of life. He was very happy to have his children, stepchildren and grandchildren around him again, and the ride back to Florida after the visit was one of the saddest I have ever made. His will was so strong in his last year, and he suffered so much, I can scarcely think of him today without wishing God had given him more time and less suffering and I treasure the memories of his visits. God bless you, Pop Mutter.

God bless you on this hot summer evening. Hope your day was better than mine since I spent the afternoon in the dentist chair getting a filling replaced. Rest in Peace, Pop Mutter.
