James V. Abbate, age 73, passed away Thursday, July 13, 2006, at his residence in Millcreek. Born in Erie on January 16, 1933, he was a son of the late Giovanni and Mary (Amendola) Abbate. During the Korean War, he served with the U.S. Army. Before his retirement in 1996, he worked in the finishing room at International Paper for 44 years. He was a member of Saint Patrick Church, American Legion East Erie Post 771, Cascade Club, and was a life member of VFW Post 470. He enjoyed sports and golfing. He was a member of the Korean War Memorial committee. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Abbate in 2000; two sons, Matthew and Michael Abbate; two sisters, Rosemary Abbate and Edith McKee; a brother, Frank Abbate; and a son-in-law, Orren Edward Moore, Jr. Survivors include four daughters, Wendy Kilgallon, Erie, Brenda Abbate, Girard, Deborah Moore and Monica Abbate, both of Erie; a son, Mark Abbate, wife Melissa, Erie; eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; two sisters, Theresa Prassack, husband Jack, and Carol Dean, husband Gerald, all of Erie; a brother, Anthony Abbate, wife Peggy, Erie; his best friend and chosen brother, Pat Sheldon, Erie; several nieces and nephews.
