Our almighty God, in His infinite wisdom, gently closed the eyes of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, gr-gr-gr-grandmother, sister and friend.
Betty Shaw Bussey, daughter of the late Cornelius and Georgia Colbert, was born March 28, 1895 in Northampton County, North Carolina.* She departed this life at the age of 94 years, 364 days in the year of our Lord, 1990.
She was one of eight children who was raised in a loving Christian home where God was the head of the home.
At a very early age, her family moved to Emporia, Virginia where she attended the Emporia school system.
Betty was united in Holy Matrimony to the late David Shaw and to this union one daughter, Josephine, and one son Jeremiah were born.
After the death of her husband in 1923, she moved her family to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The following year, she met and married George Bussey.
Because of her desire to raise her children in an atmosphere where they could feel free to romp and roam, and where she could broaden her many talents, she moved, along with her husband to Linconia.
Many years later, again a widow, she moved to Yardley, Baptist church and worked dutifully in God's service. She loved her church and pastor. She loved and was truly a gentle caring person to all who knew her. She was always encouraged everyone to do their best, but above all trust and love God.
She is gone from sight, but our memories shall live forever. She leave s to mourn her passing a loving son, Jerry; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Thelma Bussey; two sisters, Mrs. Maggie Walton and Mrs. Molly Taylor of Emporia, Virginia; an adopted daughter Mrs. Beatrice Johnson of Rock Tavern, New York; ten grandchildren, thirty-eight great-grandchildren, forty-nine great-great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.
*The 1900 East Gaston, Northampton County, North Carolina census: Her parents are listed along with other siblings: Lucy, Willie, John, James and Thomas. Betty is the youngest child listed, age 1, thus there is an age discrepancy. She could have been born in 1899 or 1900.
