Ellis "E.S." Chapin of Gove, Kansas, was born on December 19, 1927 in Oak Grove, Arkansas. He passed away on Friday, Noverment 22, 1991, at the Gove County Hospital in Quinter at the age of 63.
E.S. was the eldest son and first born of James and Mattie (Shahan) Chapin. At the age of 14, E.S. traveled to Gove, KS, to make his own way in life. He worked as a farmhand and served the U.S.Army during World War II in the Phillipines. Upon his return to Gove, he worked for the Grinnell Coop. In the 1960's, he ran Chapin's Garage in Gove and returned to the Coop after selling his business. For the last several years and until the time of his death, E.S. was employed with the Gove County Road Department.
In addition to his many hours of enjoyment in his wood shop, E.S. enjoyed hunting, fishing, and helping family and friends.
E.S. is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Kermit "Peewee" and Pat Chapin of Gove, and their family: Kirk and Deb Chapin of Hays; Kim and Curtis Tichenor Ashley & Cody, Valley Falls, KS; and Kent & Paula Chapin, Grainfield; his two sisters and families: Marie & Dean Hand, Austin, TX. and Veta & Don Pruett, Splindora, TX. He is also survived by two half brothers, Mac Chapin, Berryville, Ark. and Jimmy Ray Chapin, Blue Eye, MO., and two half sisters: Rosemary Phalen and Nora Lou Hespath, both of Berryville, Ark.
E.S. was a long time Gove county resident, a member of the United Methodist Church of Gove and the American Legion of Grainfield.
Funeral services, with military honors, took place on Tuesday, Novembmer 26, at the United Methodist church in Gove. Rev. Joe Arganbright and Rev. Ken Codner officiated the services. E.S. was buried in the Gove Cemetery.
