Fred M. Crippen, was born September 27, 1905 at Gove, Kansas and was the son of Charles G. and Emma Jane (Rhodes) Crippen. He passed away July 14, 1993 at the Gove County Medical Center, Quinter, Kansas at the age of 87 years, 9 months, 17 days.
He was a graduate of Gove High School and in 1956 obtained his Bachelor of Science degree at Fort Hays State University at Hays, Kansas.
Fred dedicated forty-four of his working years to the education profession holding teaching and administrative positions at schools located in Gove, St. Francis, Grinnell, Angelus and Missouri Flats rural schools. he also served as a past county superintendent in Gove County. In his later years he always enjoyed his former students stopping by for a visit.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Lions Club, and the Odd Fellows Lodge, all of Gove. He was also a member of Teacher's Hall of Fame at Dodge City and had served as a past city council member and mayor of Gove.
Fred was an outdoorsman and was alwys happy to be outside caring for his lawn and vegetable garden. He especially enjoyed his flower garden. He had several cats but had a special love for his house cat, "Snooks". He liked attending the Senior Citizen's Center and did so every day. His children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were very important and special to him. He also enjoyed his good neighbors.
On May 1, 1927, Fred was united in marriage with Arlene Hefner at Gove, Kansas. She passed away April 18, 1981.
Survivors include a son, Donald E. Crippen and wife Doris, of Hill City, KS; three grandsons, Galen Crippen and wife Sheryl, of Wichita, KS; Jerry Crippen and wife Ursula, of Regensburg, Germany; Jeff Crippen and wife Shelly, of Wichita, KS; five great grandchildren, Jascon, Matthew, Robert, Hannah and Todd Crippen, all of Wichtia, KS.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Len and Ray Crippen and one sister, Verda Crippen.
Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church at Gove, KS on Saturday, July 17, 1993, Rev. Joe Arganbright officiating; burial was at the Gove Cemetery. The Schmitt Funeral Home of Quinter was in charge of arrangements.
