"LAST RITES HELD IN PRESBYTER'N CHURCH FOR THOS. G. BRENTON -- Funeral services for Thomas Brenton, 54, who spent most of his life in Villisca and vicinity, were held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. in the Presbyterian church, conducted by the Rev. W.F. Clayburg who was assisted by the Rev. Arthur Mortenson. The music was by a male quartet composed of J.H. Todd, H.D. Beckham, R.J. Swanson and H.H. Nordyke, with Mrs. J.L. Wheeler at the organ.
"The pallbearers were Harold Bickford, F.B. Taylor, F.S. Pierson, C.G. English, J.F. Joy and J.L. Wheeler. The Masonic order of Villisca held burial services at the grave in the Villisca cemetery. Members of the O.E.S. and Masonic lodges attended the service in groups. Mrs. F.B. Taylor, Mrs. H.C. Arnold and Mrs. Ray Mann assisted with the flowers.
"At the time of Mr. Brenton's death at his home Wednesday evening of last week, his body was taken to the R.C. Pitman funeral home where it remained until Friday afternoon when it was returned to the Brenton home until the funeral service.
"Thomas G. Brenton, son of Frank and Ida Brenton, was born May 15, 1884, on a farm south of Grant, Iowa, where he spent his boyhood. In the fall after he graduated from the Villisca high school in the spring of 1902, he began working in the W.H. Weber dry goods store here.
"In 1908 he accepted a position in Fresno, Calif., where he spent about 6 months, after which he returned to Red Oak for a short time, and in the fall of 1909 he reentered the employ of Mr. Weber from whom he purchased a half interest in the business in 1916. In 1919 he took over the entire stock, and he remained in the mercantile business until a few weeks before his death when he sold out.
"He was married June 30, 1909 to Miss Mable Dennis of Villisca who survives him. He leaves also his mother, Mrs. Ida Brenton, Villisca; two sons, Judd and Dean Brenton, Dayton Ohio; two brothers, Oliver Brenton, Villisca and Ora Brenton, St. Louis, Mo.; and two sisters, Mrs. J.F. English, Villisca and Mrs. G.G. Ashmore, Derby, Colo.
"Mr. Brenton united with the Presbyterian church early in his life, and he was a member of the Masonic order of Villisca. He served as a member of the city council, and at the time of his death he was president of the Villisca Country club and a director of the building and loan association.
"Among the relatives and friends from a distance who attended the funeral services were Mr. and Mrs. Albert Morrison, Oakland, Iowa; Ora Brenton and Mrs. H.C. Dak.; Norm Leonard and son Harold and Tom Mooney, ___kee, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. _____ Shepherd, Mrs. Alvin Hayes, Mrs. Iva Apple, Mrs. Laura Shaver, A.M. Hawkins and J.T. Keckley, Red Oak; Mr. and Mrs. Jess Simpson, Mrs. Bessie Wilson and Mrs. Ora Reynolds, Oakland, Iowa."
