Wife of Palo Alto (CA) city manager Frank Benest

From Palo Alto (CA) Weekly 2/25/2004:

"She was an incredible gift to our community -- she was so generous and kind," close friend Caroline Kosaka, president of the PTA at El Carmelo School, where Noah and Leila Rose attend said of Brady. She said her death stunned friends.

Despite some continuing health issues, Brady's enthusiasm for her children and their schools spilled into a range of activities, including working each week in each of her children's classrooms, conducting a math lab in her daughter's class and reading in her son's.

She participated in a parent-led noon art programs, teaching arts and crafts to the pupils. She chaired the PTA's "Wardrobe Drive," which provides donated winter clothing to families and rents ski clothing to children and adults to raise funds.

Grady served as vice president for outreach at the El Carmelo PTA and co-chaired the Escrip program wherein local merchants accept scrip in lieu of cash, with a portion going to the schools.

Her involvement "showed how much she loved her children and community," Kosaka said. Her hats, ranging from sun bonnets to close-fitting dress hats, "were her trademark," she said. "She always looked elegant."

Grady was born June 7, 1951, in Canton, Ohio, becoming the fourth of eight children. She received a bachelor's. degree in liberal arts in 1974 from Kent State University. In 1977, she received a master's degree in child development and home economics from Eastern Michigan University.

A visit to family members in Southern California prompted a move to Redondo Beach, where she met Benest, who was working as human-services director in nearby Gardena. They married in 1985.

In 1988, they moved to Brea, in Orange County, when Benest was named Brea city manager -- and Grady led a literacy project for children and joined the League of Women Voters. They moved to Palo Alto when Benest was named city manager in 2000, and she joined the women's club of St. William Catholic Church in Los Altos.

Grady is also survived by brothers Mike of North Canton, Patrick of Manhattan Beach, Tim of Ringwood, N.J., and Brian of Curacao, The Netherlands-Antilles; sisters Mickie Brozovich of North Canton, Jo Grady-Stone of Rancho Palos Verdes and Chris Boydstun of Woodland Hills.
