| Birth: | Apr. 13, 1802, USA | | Death: | Jan. 26, 1895 Palmyra Wayne County New York, USA | Compositor (typesetter) of the 1830 first edition of the Book of Mormon. The headstone donated by the BYU Religious Education Faculty, staff, and friends of the university. This is the only marker ever placed over John with his wife and family of nine children. The Book of Mormon manuscript was one solid paragraph from beginning to end. Hyrum Smith and Martin Harris would sneak the manuscript pages in by day and out by night, so as not to be discovered by their enemies. Gilbert was allowed for three nights to take the pages home to punctuate but was told to leave any gramatical errors as they were. Later Hyrum, Martin, or Oliver Cowdrey would proof his additions.
