MARQUETTE - William John Holm, 84, of 2493 Moran St., Marquette, entered eternal life Wednesday morning, Jan. 6, 2010, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans where he had resided for the past two days.

Bill was born Oct. 23, 1925, in Marquette, a son of William H. and Cora E. (Anderson) Holm, and was a lifelong Marquette resident. He attended the Nester School and Graveraet High School. At the age of 17, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1942 to 1947. In 1948, he continued his military career by enlisting in the U.S. Army. Bill honorably served during World War II and the Korean War, retiring on May 31, 1964, after more than 20 years of service to his country. He received several medals and citations for his service, including the Bronze Star. While in service, he married Maria J. Flori on April 22, 1960, in Fulda, Germany. Returning home, Bill attended trade school for refrigeration and went to work for Cliff Dow until its closure. He then was employed with Sara Lee (Bunny Bread) for 18 years before retiring.

Bill was a lifelong member of the Richard Jopling Post 44 of the American Legion, Negaunee V.F.W., and the former Moose Lodge.

In his earlier years, he enjoyed deer hunting, bowling, traveling to Germany, and working in his garden. He was an avid cribbage player and liked playing on Wednesdays at the Elks Club. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Bill is survived by his wife, Maria; sons Robert (Kris) Holm of Harvey and Joseph Holm of Marquette; his daughters, Linda (Mark) Johnson of Marquette and Gloria (Jon) Moen of Pickerington, Ohio; four grandsons and three granddaughters. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by sons William S. Holm and Charles Holm; and daughter Donna Ryan; his sister, Margaret D. Hillier; and nephew, Ronald Griffin.
