Geraldine (Blake) Ames
December 9, 1939 - May 4, 2011

Geraldine Kay Ames, 71, of Virgil, died Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at Fire Steel Healthcare Center in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7th at the Rembold Funeral Home in St. Lawrence. Visitation will be two hours before the funeral at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Tulare Cemetery.

Geraldine Kay Blake was born December 9, 1939 to Raphael and Mable (Hammill) Blake in Miller. She grew up and attended country school in rural Ree Heights. She attended Ree Heights High School, graduating in 1957. Gerry and her mother then moved to Huron for a short time after her father's death. While in Huron she graduated from the Huron Business School.

Gerry then returned to Ree Heights where she met Steve "Bud" Ames. They were married nearly 50 years ago on June 11, 1961. They farmed by Wessington Springs for a short time and then moved northwest of Miller near Bud's family farm. They then moved to the Virgil area to live and farm and have been there for 45 years.

Gerry was a great cook and baker. She cooked meals for Bud and the farm help and even hauled many fried chicken meals to the field for the guys. Gerry would get on a tractor to help in the hay field. She also helped move cattle. She raised chickens, milked cows and helped raise many calves, lambs, pigs, cats, dogs and even a pet raccoon. Gerry grew many gardens.

Gerry did some fishing with her family when they were younger but her favorite past times were planting flowers and sewing for herself and her family, including making her own wedding gown, her daughter's wedding gown and her granddaughter's first communion dresses.

In the last few years she started quilting and sewing doll clothes for her family. She was an avid fan of NASCAR, the Vikings, Twins and Cornhuskers, and enjoyed watching rodeos. Gerry most enjoyed the times spent with family, children and grandchildren.

Surving her are Steve "Bud" Ames, her husband of nearly 50 years; daughter, Sandra (Alan) Woytassek of Aberdeen, SD; two sons, Randy (Kate) Ames of Grand Island, Nebraska, Rick Ames of Mitchell, South Dakota; eight grandchildren, Abby, Kendra, Rebecca, Alexandra and Andrea Woytassek of Aberdeen, Wyatt, Garrett and Levi Ames of Grand Island; one sister Joyce Blake of Ft. Bragg, California; and numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother and sister-in-law Delton and Mabel (Harvey) Blake and an infant sister, Dorothy.
