Ed Hughes was born Feb. 26, 1918 in Elizabeth City. Preceding him in death were his parents, John Edward Hughes and Edna Kramer Hughes. He attended Elizabeth City schools and was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy and continued his career with the Navy following the war, retiring as full commander. Before moving to Florida, he maintained a home in Virginia Beach for many years.
