A retired employe of Lukens Steel Co., and one of the organizers of Lukens Veterans Guild, Walter E. Barnes, 71, of 110 Walnut St., died Monday evening in Coatesville Hospital.
He was admitted to the hospital in the morning, shortly after suffering an attack at his home.
Mr. Barnes had been an employee of the local steel firm for 46 years before his retirement in 1956. He was employed in the technical plate sales department.
Following his retirement, he was employed for two years by the City of Coatesville in the engineering department. Among his more recent activities was participation on the dedication committee for the Chester County Airport Authority.
Active in numerous civic and church groups, he was a past president of Lukens Veterans Guild, a past president of the Chester County Retired Men's Club, a member of Coatesville Lodge No. 564 F&AM, and Washington Hose Co. No. 1.
A member of Olivet Methodist Church, he served as a former treasurer of the church. He was also a trustee and chairman of the property committee.
Born in Camden, N.J., he was a son of the late Alonzo and Lena Hermann Barnes. He had resided in Coatesville for the past 60 years.
Surviving are his wife, the former Ann Martin; two sons, William M and Harold E., both of Coatesville; a daughter, Jane, wife of Vernon J. Patterson, Painted Post, N.Y., and six grandchildren.
Also a half-brother, Howard J. Hamilton, Philadelphia; and a half-sister, Miss Helen M. Hamilton, Woodbury, N.J.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from the S. Paul Roberts Funeral Home, 1030 E. Lincoln Hwy. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday evening after 7 o'clock.
