William (Bill) Marion Baiotto, 83, of Kirksville, Missouri passed away Sunday (February 10, 2008) at Twin Pines Adult Care Center.
The son of Marion and Rose (Cima) Baiotto, he was born April 8, 1924 in Novinger, MO. On May 22, 1948 in St. Louis, MO he married Elmira (Myra) Evans.
Surviving are his wife, Myra; three sons, Barry Baiotto of Kirksville, Steven and wife Donna (Walther) Baiotto of Raytown, MO and Kevin and wife Carol (Casper) Baiotto of Kirksville; eight grandchildren, Matthew Baiotto of New York, NY, Nicole and husband Kyle Pace of Lees Summit, MO, Anne-Elsie and Michael Baiotto of Raytown, MO, Theresa and Bert Baiotto of Denver, CO, Andrea and Leah Baiotto of Kirksville; two great grandchildren, Emily and Elias Pace of Lees Summit, MO, and two sisters, Hilvina Baiotto of Kirksville, and Marion Rose Hammer of San Antonio TX.
Bill was a 1942 graduate of Novinger High School. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942, serving in the Pacific Theatre during WWII, on Tinian, Saipan and the occupation of Japan. Following WWII he attended and graduated in 1948, from the David Ranken School of Mechanical Trades in St. Louis, MO. Bill moved to Kirksville in 1948 and entered the coal mining business with his father, working at the Baiotto Mine (#11), and later as owner-operator of the Billy Creek Coal Co. in Novinger. He closed that mine in 1966, as the last vertical shaft coal mine in the State of Missouri. He then joined his father as owner-manager of Baiotto Concrete Products, Inc. in Kirksville until his retirement in 1990.
He was a member of the Kirksville First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, deacon chair, head usher as well as serving on a variety of committees. He was instrumental in recruiting the charter members of the Senior Songsters. For 18 years he was a member of the governing board of the Missouri Baptist Children's Home.
Bill was an avid community supporter, he enjoyed several years as a Jaycee member, serving as president, and Missouri Jaycees Secretary. During his sons growing years he was a leader in the Boy Scouts of America and Little League Baseball Association, serving on that founding committee. Other activities included NEMO Fair Board, president for 5 years, Chamber of Commerce past president, Kirksville Community Betterment, Chairman of "Still The Best" parade for KCOM Founders Day, 4 years as a board member for KCOM, Missouri Ready-Mix Assoc. member and president, Salvation Army Advisory Board, RSVP board and American Legion Post 20.
Maintaining close ties with his roots, Bill served as president and other offices for the Novinger High School Alumni Association, worked with the Novinger Renewal and Novinger Planned Progress Groups, helping to develop the Log Homestead, Coal Miners Museum and Community Building.
Always a very giving person, Bill has given 15 1/2 gallons of blood during the American Red Cross Bloodmobiles over the years.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday (February 14, 2008) at the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home with Reverend Marty Joplin officiating. Burial will be in Park View Memorial Gardens in Kirksville.
Pallbearers will be Matthew Baiotto, Bert Baiotto, Michael Baiotto, Kyle Pace, Wayne Newman and Glen Novinger, Jr. Honorary bearers will be Deacons of First Baptist Church, John Airale, Harriet Beard, Glenna Daniels, Jack Fennel, Robert Gashwiller, Joyce Hammons, Paul McCartney, Patti Morris, Harvey Rogers and Jean Smith
