Abe Barnhart, 81 years old, a retired merchant and Civil War veteran, died yesterday afternoon at his home in Trenton after an illness of several weeks. Death was due to paralysis.
The body was taken through Kirksville this afternoon on its way to Brashear where burial will take place. Funeral services will be held at the United Brethren Church in Brashear tomorrow morning at 10:30 o'clock.
Mr. Barnhart was the son of Henry and Hannah (Reed) Barnhart and was born near Mercer County, Pennsylvania and made his home in and near Brashear until about nine years ago when he moved to Trenton. He was well known throughout Adair County and has a host of friends who extend sympathy to the bereaved family.
He leaves two daughters and a son. They are Mrs. Minnie Vawter and Miss Etta Barnhart of Trenton and Henry Barnhart of Brashear. Mrs. Florence Anderson, Mrs. Maude Campbell and Mrs. Sam Chadwell of Kirksville are his nieces. Mrs. Anderson was with him at the time of his death.
"Abram Barnhart moved to Jackson Coutny, Iowa, in the fall of 1885, coming there with his parents, Henry and Hannah (Reed) Barnhart. There he lived till 1857, then came to Adair County, where he has since lived. His wife came here the same year from Ohio. All his life he has followed the occupation of farming and stock raising, except the last two years, having retired in the fall of 1909. At that time he sold his farm, moving to Brashear where he now lives. He and his wife, a sister of the late C.G. Cornell, own about 700 acres of land in various parts of the county.
Mr. Barnhart was born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, March 27, 1843, where he lived until 1885. He was married March 7, 1865 to Lufinia Cornell, daughter of Clark and Louisa Cornell. Mrs. Barnhart was born in Ashland County, Ohio, October 12, 1845. They had four children: Henry, born February 16, 1866; Ella, September 16, 1868; Etta M.,February 1, 1873; Minnie, January 7, 1876. Mr. Barnhart is a Republican and a member of the Methodist Episcopal church."
