Charlie was born at home at 42 Upper Erne Street Dublin. He had fought against the British in the war of independence in Ireland. When independence came in 1921 he became a Lieut in the Irish Army under Michael Collins when the civil war broke out in 1922. He was wounded during an ambush on a train that he was aboard in 1923 in county Wexford. He was returning fire when he was shot. He lost too much blood and died in the infirmary in Wexford Town. He was buried with full military honours in the Free State Plot in Glasnevin Cemetary in Dublin.
