Edward James Newhart was the 1st child of Brady James Newhart and Florence Cornell Newhart of Trumansburg, NY.
He was born in Ithaca, NY on October 20th, 1923.
Edward was one of 10 children. Brothers and sisters were: Mary Cornell, Betty (Wilson), Marge (Stevenson), Connie Newhart, Janet Newhart, Geraldine (Manheim), Thelma (Onan) Bruce and Brady Newhart.
Ed served in WWII from 1942 - 1946, as a Air Force Corporal. He was a military policeman, Stationed in Asam, India for much of the war.
Ed married Rheta Ann Wilcox on October 4, 1942. Rheta is the daughter of Margaret Faye Hotchkiss Wilcox Keeney and Quimby Webb Wilcox. Ed and Rheta lived in the home they built after the war at 1960 Slaterville Road, Ithaca NY until 1986.
Ed and Rheta had 5 children: Gary Edward Newhart(1943), Robert Quimby Newhart (1947 - 12/23/06), Rebecca Ann Newhart-Drader-Triant-Personius-Williams(1952),Beth Ann Newhart-Cox-Dowling (1957) and Sara Jane Newhart Ashman (1962).
Ed worked for the NY Telephone Company, Ithaca, NY for 35 years until his retirement in 1985. He also worked as the Dryden Town Justice in Dryden, NY from 1966 until 1986. Judge Newhart was very well known by many in the Ithaca and Dryden area.
Ed died on December 19th, 1988 in North Fort Myers, FLA where he and Rheta lived during the winter months. Congestive Heart Failure and diabetes complications were cause of death. His funeral was held in Ithaca, NY at the E.C. Wagner Funeral Home on 12/23/88.His calling hours ran to 4+ hours in length because so many came to pay their respects.
At the time of his death Ed was grandfather to 14 grandchildren. Faith and Luke Newhart(Gary). Bob,Jr. Mark,Matthew,Tabetha, Mary Newhart (Robert), Eric and Daniel Triant, Terry, Ryan, Kyle, Jennifer Cox, Sean Ashman. After his death Amanda Ashman and Katherine Cox were born, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services for former Dryden Town Justice Edward J. Newhart, 65, of 901 Dryden Road, who died Dec. 19 at a hospital in Cape Coral, Fla., were Dec. 23 in Ithaca. Spring burial will be in Quick Cemetery, Ithaca.

Mr. Newhart, an Ithaca native, was the Dryden town justice for 20 years. He also was employed 38 years with New York Telephone Co.

Mr. Newhart was a member of Caroline Lodge 681, F&AM, the State Magistrates Association and the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Rheta A.; three daughters, Beth Cox of Camillus and Sara Ashman and Rebekah Triant, both of Ithaca; two sons, Gary E. of Pittsford and Robert Q. of Ithaca; a brother, Bruce of Trumansburg; six sisters, Marge Stevenson, Beth Wilson and Connie Newhart, all of Trumansburg, Thelma Onan of Auburn, Janet Smith of Hollywood, Fla., and Geraldine Manheim of Ithaca; and 15 grandchildren.

Contributions may be made to Heart Mates Inc., in care of Charles Bell, County Trust Co., PO Box 460, Ithaca, or to the Diabetes Fund, in care of Tompkins County Hospital.

Wagner's Funeral Home, Ithaca, had charge of arrangements.
