"BAKER, Dorothy Lugar - Of Genesee, age 96, died Tuesday, April 20 at Hurley Medical Center. The Life celebration will take place 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 24 at the Miles Martin Funeral Home in Mt. Morris. Pastor Bruce Nowacek will officiate with private burial to follow in Edge Hill Cemetery, in Charles Town, West Virginia, on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Family will receive friends at the Miles Martin Funeral Home on Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at 10:00 a.m. Memorial donations may be directed to the Dorothy Baker Scholarship Fund at Genesee Schools or Genesee United Methodist Church. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Dorothy was born March 8, 1914 in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nokomis and Blanche (Kaylor) Lugar. She and Jonathan Baker were united in marriage October 7, 1934 In Star Junction, PA. She is a graduate of Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, West Virgina, and the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Dorothy began her teaching career in Jefferson County, West Virginia, teaching at Summit Point and Blue Ridge Elementary Schools. After moving to Michigan in 1950, she taught elementary and high school, and served as a counselor and athletic director at Genesee Schools for 33 years. Dorothy was principal of Genesee High School from 1956 to 1977. She was one of the first women principals in the State of Michigan. In 1977, she returned to the classroom, where she worked as a teacher and counselor until her retirement in 1983. Dorothy loved to be an active part of her grandchildren's lives, reading, walks in nature, caring for her animals, 'bargain' shopping and being involved in community activities in Genesee.

Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory, two sons, Dr. Dale and wife Diane Baker and Dr. Jay and wife Debby Baker, four grandchildren, Dori and husband Hank Williams, David and wife Margaret Baker, Jon Baker, and Jayson Baker, seven great-grandchildren, Dawson, and Alexis Williams, Adela, Elafna, Faith, Zannah, and Graham Baker, and many nieces, nephew, and special friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jonathan, granddaughter Debbie Baker, two sisters, Marjorie and Helen, and one brother, Marlyn. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the village of Genesee, especially very special friends, who made it possible for Mom/Grandma to be in her home until the end of her life. GO BLUE !
