Rachel Peden, daughter of Alexander Peden b. 1762 and Abigail Walton b. abt. 1771. The Peden family were devout Quakers. After her parents died, Rachel went to Sistersville, Tyler Co. WV, near where her uncle Obediah Peden had lived as she had many cousins there. She met and later married John Brown b. 1801 there on July 9th, 1827. Their first child Alexander Peden Brown was born at Sistersville, WV. on Nov. 25th, 1828.

They later moved to Hamilton Co. Ohio and then to Eugene, Vermillion Co.IN. The family was blessed with 11 children, Alexander, Israel,Benjamin F., William O, susan E, Jane, Eliza E., Andrew, Esther, Ann and Margaret, all living to adulthood, except Esther.

After Rachel died in 1867, John Brown moved to Fontana, KS. to live with his son oldest son, Alexander and family. John Brown died Jan. 30th, 1877, at age 75.
