William was born in Cleveland to William Horace Guthrie (born 1893 in Connersville, IN) and Sarah Kathryn Denny (b. 1894 in Tarentum, PA). He met his wife Maryvonne Janine Rollet in Parish while serving in WWII - she was a bilingual secretary in the U.S. Army office. They moved to Dayton, OH where their children Philippe William (1952) and Isabelle Kathryn (1962) were born. He lived in Englewood, Ohio for many years prior to his death, a city where his son was a police officer and lieutenant for 27 years.
