When John was 12 his father passed away. He learned to be a very hard worker to support a family of nine. He attended the Coalville and Weber Academies, where he worked to earn his room and board.
He was a member of the Tabernacle Choir. He enjoyed singing with his brother Raymond. He was also a Temple worker in the Oakland California Temple.
John married Sarah Steward on December 6, 1916. They had 6 children and lived in Rupert Idaho, Salt Lake City Utah, and Cedar City Utah. After they were divorced, John married Annie Garner Burton and lived in California.
On December 24, 1967, John suffered a stroke and was unable to walk or talk until his death December 1, 1982.

28 grandchildren, many greatgrandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.
