WILLIAM HARVEY ZIMMER, REV.

Rev. William H. Zimmer, age 65, Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Manitowoc, died
unexpectedly Thursday, November 25, 1999, at the rectory.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 29, 1999, at Sacred
Heart Catholic Church. Main celebrant will be Bishop Robert J. Banks, Bishop of
the Diocese of Green Bay, with burial at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.
Fr. Zimmer was born September 16, 1934, in Manitowoc, son of Viola A. Stangel
Zimmer and the late Joseph F. Zimmer. He attended high school and junior college
at Mount Calvary and received his B.A. in philosophy at St. Paul Seminary in June
of 1956. He studied theology at the Theological College of the Catholic University
of America, Washington D.C. and received his M.A. in English in June of 1960. He
was ordained by Bishop Bona at the Cathedral in Green Bay in June of 1960. Fr. Bill
was assigned to the faculty of Sacred Heart Seminary, Oneida, in August of 1960. He
became pastor of Sacred Heart Parish (his home parish) on June 16, 1976. He was
elected Vice-President of the Priests Senate, December 10, 1976 and President of
the Priests Senate, January 30, 1979. Member of the Social Justice Commission June 22,
1981. He wrote the History of the Diocese of Green Bay in collaboration with Fr.
Gordon Gilsdorf, 1968 and published 52 articles on the history of the diocese in the
diocesan newspaper, The Spirit, in 1976. He was a member of the Noon Rotary Club of
Manitowoc and was recently recognized by being named a Paul Harris Fellow by the
Sunrise Rotary Club. During his years as a parish priest, he has also served on the
Diocesan Justice Peace Commission, Lakeshore Marriage Encounter, Manitowoc County
Committee on Aging, Lakeshore Indo-Chinese Mutual Assistance Association, the Holy
Hill Forum and was a state representative to the National Federations of Priests
Councils. He also served on the Board of Directors and Board of Education of Roncalli
High School, Consolidated Manitowoc Association of Catholic Schools, Institute of
Religious Studies of Adults, Florentine Operation Advisory Board in Milwaukee, Pamira
Opera Board in Green Bay and Chaplin for the Manitowoc Community Hospice. In 1995,
Fr. Bill was recognized as a National Parish Pastor of the Year, a recognition by
the Academy of Parish Clergy, in 1997, he ws (sic) recognized by the Manitowoc Lion's
and received their distinguished Service Award. He currently was serving the Commission
Ministry Advisory Board of the Green Bay Diocese and was currently on the Presbyteral
Council.
Survivors include his mother, Viola A. Zimmer, Manitowoc; two brothers and sisters-in-
law and two sisters include, Joseph and Jolene Zimmer, Mary Zimmer, John and Bernie
Zimmer, Ann Behrmann, all of Manitowoc; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends
survive. He was preceded in death by one nephew, Patrick J. Zimmer.
The reception of the body at Sacred Heart Catholic Church will be 4 p.m.on Sunday,
(TONIGHT) by Rev. Ronald Colombo, with visitation to follow until 8 p.m. A prayer
service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue on Monday from 9 a.m. until
the time of service.
Memorials would be appreciated to MACS or Roncalli High School.
The Reinbold and Pfeffer Family Funeral Home, Manitowoc, is serving the family.
