Joseph Zimmer, Civic Leader, Dies at Age 62
Joseph F. Zimmer of 828 Lincoln Blvd, businessman and civic leader, died early
Thursday at St. Francis Hospital, Milwaukee, at the age of 62. He had been in
ill health for two months.
Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Mittnacht Funeral Home,
Manitowoc, and at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. William H.
Zimmer, a son, will be celebrant at a solemn requiem High Mass and burial will
be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Mr. Zimmer was born Feb. 6, 1900, at Menomonee Falls, son of the late John and
Catherine Terry Zimmer. He attended grade and high school at Menomonee Falls.
On Sept. 6, 1930, he married the former Viola Stangel at Sacred Heart Catholic
Church, Manitowoc.
Moved to Manitowoc.
The couple resided at Menomonee Falls for four years where Mr. Zimmer was employed
at the Farmers and Merchants Bank. In 1934 they moved to Manitowoc. Since that time
he has been secretary and credit and collections manager at the J.J. Stangel
Hardware Co.
Mr. Zimmer was a member and past president of Sacred Heart Holy Name Society,
secretary of the Manitowoc Serra Club, a member of the 3rd and 4th degree Knights
of Columbus, chairman of the Manitowoc County Retreat League, past treasurer of the
National Catholic Laymens Retreat League, member of the Sacred Heart Seminary League
and served on the board of directors of the Manitowoc Catholic Apostolate.
With his late brother, Dr. A. J. Zimmer, he founded Bishop Rhode Circle 450,
Columbian squires and is a former chief counselor. He was prefect of Holy Innocents
3rd Order Fraternity of St. Francis, was a trustee of Sacred Heart Catholic Church
and was a member of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin.
Optomist Member
Mr. Zimmer was also a member of the Optimists Club, Isaak Walton League, Manitowoc
Credit Granters Assn. and the Northeast Wisconsin Credit Assn. He was a former scout
master of Troop 7, B.S.A.
Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Mary C., of Green Bay and Sister M. Nicoline
of the Convent of the Sorrowful Mother, Milwaukee; three sons, Joseph A. and John J.,
of Manitowoc, and the Rev. William H. Zimmer of Sacred Heart Seminary, Oneida; a
brother Jacob of Colgate; a sister, Mrs. Barbara Fellenz, of New Holstein, and one
grandson.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 p.m. Friday until the time of services
Saturday. The Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday by the Knights of Columbus.
Columbian Squires and former Squires. At 8 p.m. Friday the Sacred Heart Holy Name
Society, parish members and the Serra Club will recite the Rosary and at 9 p.m.
Friday Holy Innocents 3rd Order Fraternity of St. Francis will recite the Rosary.
