Manitowoc Mother Is Killed In Accident; State Toll 353

Chest Injuries Cause Death

A young Manitowoc mother was killed Sunday when the automobile she was driving alone went out of control 2-1/2 miles southwest of the city on Highway 42.

Mrs. David Osterloth, 19, the former Lynn Zeman, was pronounced dead at the scene of crushing chest injuries. She and her husband, who reportedly was in Peoria, Ill., on business at the time, had been residing at 1601-A Marshall St.

Authorities said Mrs. Osterloth was the mother of two young children and was expecting a third.

The accident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. on a straight stretch of highway with a slight downgrade a short distance south of Browns Corners.

Traveling South

County traffic police reported that Mrs. Osterloth was traveling in a south-westerly direction when the car apparently went off the right side of the road and traveled on the shoulder for approximately 144 feet before it hit two mail-boxes. Then it continued on for a short distance, skidded across the highway into the east ditch and struck a driveway embankment and culvert. The car, a 1959 model Chevrolet which was not equipped with seat belts, remained upright but was damaged extensively about the front and right side.

Mrs. Osterloth apparently was thrown against the steering wheel and dashboard. She was found lying on the front floor of the car. The impact caused window glass to pop out of the car.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. Theodore Teitgen, county coroner, who said no inquest was planned.

Sgt. Vernon Kliment and officer William gamble of county police were assisted in the accident investigation by Officers Edward Taylor and Robert Popp of the Wisconsin State Patrol.

Mrs. Osterloth was the sixth person to die on Manitowoc County roads so far this year compared with 10 in 1966 and four at this time two years ago.

Native of Manitowoc

Mrs. Osterloth was born Sept. 11, 1947, at Manitowoc, daughter of Gilbert and Shirley Bentley Zeman, 1504 New York Ave., Manitowoc. She was married to David Osterloth May 2, 1964, at Manitowoc and was employed until her death at the Aluminum Specialty Co., Manitowoc.

Funeral services will be announced later by Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home, Manitowoc.

Besides her husband and parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Zeman, she is survived by a son, Brian, a daughter, Kimberly, and a brother, Scott, of Manitowoc.
