Tony F. Zak, a Republic Steel Corp. retiree and World War II Army veteran, had been commander of the Polish Legion of American Veterans Post 30 in Cleveland. He also held office with the organization at the national level.
Mr. Zak was more than an officer and spokesman for the veterans group. He donated more than 3,650 volunteer hours to making life more pleasant for patients at the local veterans hospitals.
He regularly visited former soldiers and sailors at the Cleveland VA Medical Center at Wade Park and its predecessor, the Crile Veterans Hospital. He escorted patients to religious services and organized parties, games and other entertainment for them.
Mr. Zak, 86, of Parma, died Sunday at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky.
He was born in Reading, Pa., with the surname Zakrzewski.He continued using his given name after coming to Cleveland around 1930, but shortened it to Zak in the late 1940s.
In 1974, Mr. Zak retired from Republic Steel, where he had worked as a plumber for 44 years.
During World War II, he served with the 705th Tank Destroyer Unit in the campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. His group received unit citation and commendation honors for its service at Bastogne.
Mr. Zak belonged to Lake Erie Post 1974 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Parma, a 30-year member of the Knights of Columbus in Brooklyn and a 25-year member of the Bishop O'Reilley Fourth Degree Knights Assembly.
His wife, Irene, died in 1988.
Survivors include his sisters, Kathryn Kelly of Cleveland and Mary Horak of Parma Heights; and brother, Stanley of Boston Heights.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. today at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 5891 Ridge Rd., Parma.
