Cherokee Sentinel, Dec. 9, 1898, page 2:
Death has visited our home once more and taken from us our dear mother, Charlotte Whitney, who passed away after a short but painful illness of five days. Everything was done that medical skill could provide to relieve her of her suffering which was intense, but everything failed. It was God's will to call her home to join her little children and dear husband who departed this life fourteen years ago.
She was born in Hancock county, Ill., Nov. 28, 1840. Moved to henry county when a little girl and lived there until she was married to Irwin Whitney at the age of 19, when they moved to Iowa and lived there until 1873. From there they moved to Kansas and settled on a farm four miles west of Cherokee, where they have since resided. Ten children were born to them, eight now living, five girls and three boys, all of whom were at her bedside except Tom, who lives in Colorado, and could not be present.
She was a kind and devoted mother who was ever ready to help those in trouble, in suffering and time of need. She will be missed by all her neighbors and friends. May our loss be her gain, and may we live to meet her and never say good-bye. Funeral services were held at the residence by G.W. Brown and her remains were laid to rest in the Cherokee cemetery.
