Edwin J. Whitney Sr., 94, of Bristol, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, January 8, 2011. Mr. Whitney was pre-deceased by his loving wife of 69 years, Hedwig (Jessie) Whitney in 2007. He was born in New Britain on July 19, 1916 and was the son of the late Jesse and Delia (Brown) Whitney. He attended New Britain schools and resided in Bristol for most of his adult life. He worked in New Britain Machine, Plume and Atwood, Seth Thomas and Buswell Engineering. Mr. Whitney was a 4th Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Daly Council 12 serving as Grand Knight in 1957. He was a 25 year volunteer at the Bristol Hospital and a member of the Bristol RSVP Mini Choral Group. In 1989, Mr. Whitney received the Arthur P. Pipke Memorial Award in recognition of his many years of outstanding volunteer leadership on behalf of the Bristol Senior Center. He was also a member of St. Matthew's Church, Forestville. Mr. Whitney enjoyed traveling with his wife on trips with the Bristol Seniors. They especially enjoyed their travels to Texas to see their son Edwin Jr., as well as extended stays in Florida. They would often vacation on the Outer Banks and Cape Cod. Mr. Whitney is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Edwin and Karen of San Antonio, TX and Richard and Cynthia of Agawam, MA; three daughters and two sons in law, Joyce and Robert Dabrowski and Delia "Dee" and Robert Christensen, all of Berlin, and Jessie Zygiel of Bristol. Mr. Whitney had 15 grandchildren: Donna and Shawn Cully of Bristol, Debra and Kevin Rooney of Vermont, Christine and Ken Mobley of Virginia, Laureen Dabrowski of New Britain, Ken and Tina Zygiel of Bristol, Lisa and Brian Lumley of Colorado, Chris and Trish Zygiel of Florida, Andrew and Holly Zygiel of Bristol, Jason and Eva Yarema of Virginia, Heather and Philip Atkins of South Carolina, James and Rochelle Whitney of Texas, Ryan Whitney and Crystal Allison of Texas, and Jessica, Michelle and Tabetha Whitney of Massachusetts. He also leaves 24 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by five brothers and three sisters. Funeral services will be on Friday (January 14, 2011) at 9 AM from Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Ave., Bristol, to St. Matthew Church, Bristol for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bristol. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Edwin J. and Hedwig B. Whitney Memorial Scholarship Fund. This scholarship is awarded by the Bristol Hospital Auxiliary and given annually to a student who has volunteered at Bristol Hospital and is pursuing a career of importance to the hospital community. Donations can be sent to Dee Christensen, 275 Lower Lane, Berlin, CT 06037 made out to the Edwin J. and Hedwig B. Whitney Scholarship account. The family would especially like to extend thanks to the loving care provided to Mr. Whitney by Cynthia Allen of VNA HealthCare of Hartford. Cynthia's compassion and gentle spirit over the last 9 months were appreciated not only by Mr. Whitney but by the entire extended Whitney family
