HISTORY OF PETTES ASELTINE CEMETERY

Pettes Aseltine Cemetery
Sutton Junction, Brome County, Quebec Contributed by Joan Cruickshank, Jul 04, 2008, last edited Jul 18, 2008 [[email protected]]. Total records = 147.
From Lac Brome (Knowlton) Quebec, follow Route 104 West, in the direction of Cowansville, Quebec, until you reach Route 215 South. Travel along Route 215 South to the tiny village of Sutton Junction. From there, follow the Mt. Echo Road for a little more than one kilometer to where it joins Chemin Elie. Take Chemin Elie, and the cemetery is located about one half kilometer on the right hand side of that road. It is well hidden amongst the trees, and has no marker of any kind, but if you look carefully, you can see the gate to the cemetery amongst the woods.
This very old cemetery is a portion of the land that was granted to Moses Westover and his wife Elizabeth Holmes, when they fled to Canada from Massachusetts at the opening of the revolution. Moses, his wife Elizabeth, and several members of their family are resting here.
Sadly, when I visited this cemetery, it was not in very good condition, giving me the impression that it had been abandoned. Due to weather and age, I found it difficult to read some of the stones, so any information contained in brackets, or marked with an asterisk (*) came from the archives at the Brome County Historical Society.
I walked this cemetery in June, 2008, and transcribed from the stones to the best of my ability.
