Rankin F. Welch, Long Identified With Ashland County, Died Saturday Evening.
Rankin F. Welch, one of the best-known and highly-esteemed pioneers of Ashland county and for many years prominent in the business and farm life of the community, died at his home on the Orange road, north of the city, Saturday evening at 7 o'clock, aged eighty-one years. Funeral service conducted by Rev. William Smith, assisted by Rev. William E. Bryce, will be held at the family residence Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. Interment at the Sullivan cemetery.
The Welch family, from whom the deceased descended, have been prominent in pioneer history, coming to this county in 1600 and settling fir in South Carolina. Objecting to slavery, they later went to Pennsylvania. Ephraim Welch, the father of Rankin F. Welch, was a man of great force of character, courage and foresightedness. He came to this county in 1826, settling in Orange township, where he acquired a farm of 800 acres. On this farm Rankin F. Welch was born in a log cabin Dec. 13, 1833. He inherited many of the sturdy characteristics of his father. In early life he was an earnest student and always retained his love of reading and research and was especially well informed upon all public questions. His early life was spent upon the farm and when the cvall came for soldiers he enlisted June 2, 1862, in Co. F, 120th O.V.I. With this regiment he served until the close of the war, detailed service of importance holding him in service after the regiment had been discharged. He was at the siege of Vicksburg and Mobile and always took pride and delight in giving incidents of the service to his family.
Returning from the service in 1867 he married Drusilla Frink of Sullivan. One son, Gilbert Perry, was born of this marriage, his mother dying when he was an infant. In 1878, he married Mary McDonald, who died in June 5, 1889, being survived by an only daughter, Grace, now Mrs. Holiday Ames, of Columbus. In 1899, he married Adele Swartz, who, with one daughter, Dorothy, survive. He is survived by wife, three children, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Catherine Bailey, the last of the original Ephraim Welch family.
