Whose Bodies Were Returned

Funeral services over the bodies of Brooklyn war veterans, which were bought to America on the steamer
Somme, were held yesterday, and today.

Military services were held at St. Rose of Lima R. C. Church yesterday afternoon for Corp. Charles G. Byrne, son of Edward F. Byrne, of 735 E. 9th St., who was killed in action on the Hindenburg Line on Sept. 27, 1918. He was 20 years old at the time of his death, and a member of Co. G, 106th Inf. He had previously seen service in Mexico with the 23d Regiment, and a guard of honor from his old 23d company accorded him the usual military honors at the internment in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Private William Baxter, son of Mrs. Margaret Baxter, of 24 Heyward St., was buried yesterday with full military honors in St. John's Cemetery. He was killed in action seven days before the Armistice, Nov. 11, 1918, while at the front in France with Co. D, 105th Inf. His funeral was escorted with a guard from the Wynn Post of the American Legion and the Lyola Council, K. of C.

Full military honors were accorded the burial of Pvt. Lester Smith this morning in Cedar Grove Cemetery. He was killed in action on the Hindenburg Line during September, 1918, while serving as a member of Co. D, 305th Machine Gun Battalion. A volley was fired over his grave by the Eastern District Post of the American Legion. Services were held for him last night in the South Third Street Prespetrian Church by the Rev. Dr. Newell Woolsey Wells.

Pvt. Edwin Welch Jr., who was killed in action on the day the war ended, Nov. 11, 1918, as a member of the 302 Engineers, will be buried in the National Plot at the Cypress Hills Cemetery next Saturday. The funeral services will be in charge of the Greenpoint Post of the American Legion and the Corp. R. V. Nolte Post of the Veterans of Forgien Wars who will accord the body full military honors.


The Rev. George E. Pickard of the Embury M. E. Church conducted the funeral services for Pvt. Henry B. Cohan yesterday. Cohan was killed in action in September, 1918, while a member of Co. A of the 106th Inf.

Requiem mass, followed by internment with military honors in Holy Cross Cemetery, was said this morning in the R. C. Church of St. Paul for Pvt. Walter Harrington, killed in action in France while a member of the 107th Inf.

Requiem mass was celebrated this morning for Pvt. William E. Kane at St. Augustine's R. C. Church, who was killed in action in France Nov. 1, 1918. He was a member at the time of his death of Co. L of the 106th Inf.
Military honors were accorded him, and a delegation of the Holy Name Society of the Church, of which he was a member, was present.

Funeral services with military honors were held for Pvt. John W. Ward this morning, preceded by requiem mass at the R. C. Church of St. Mary Star of the Sea. He was killed in battle Sept. 27, 1918, while serving as a member of Co. B, 106th Inf.

The funeral of Corp. John J. McGuire, killed in action while a member of Co. D, 106th Inf., on the Hindenburg Line in France on Sept. 27, 1918, was held this morning. Internment with full military honors was made in Holy Cross Cemetery.

The block on 4th St. between 5th and 6th Aves., was a mass of half-masted flags in honor of the homecoming of the body of Pvt. Walter Kelly yesterday. He was killed in action in France in 1918 while serving with the 106th Inf. Requiem mass was said for him this morning in the Roman Catholic Church of St. Francis Xavier and internment was made with full military honors.
