George Walton, Jr. served several terms in the Georgia General Assembly. He was practicing law in Augusta in 1821 when his wife's uncle, Senator Freeman Walker, recommended to the Secretary of State that George Walton be appointed secretary of the West Florida Territory. He received his commission from President Monroe on June 27, and was to serve under General Andrew Jackson, the appointed commissioner to receive the Floridas from Spain, and to serve as Governor of East and West Florida until a civil government could be established. He and his family moved to Pensacola, Florida, on August 5, 1821.
In 1835, the Waltons moved to Mobile. They lived on St. Anthony Street, at the corner of North Conception Street. George Walton and his wife Sally separated in 1849, at which time he moved to Washington.
Some references call him the Acting Governor of East and West Florida. Some references also give his date of death as Mar. 20, 1859, although his daughter Octavia recorded his death as Jan. 3, 1863.

'George Walton, born Prince Edward County, died January 3, 1863, was interred in the N.E. corner of Mrs. M.B. Willison square.' The superintendent of the cemetery said that the cemetery records were destroyed at one time, and she was not able to find a square in the name of Mrs. M.B. Willison, consequently there is no way to determine the location of the grave or stone. Even Colonel Walton's meager burial record was incorrect. He was born in Savannah, Georgia, in 1788, which would have made him seventy-five, and he was 'acting-governor.' "
A Walton Family Tree online listed his burial location within Blandford Cemetery as:
Ward Unknown, Section Walton, Square Walton, Location East 1/2 NE Corner, Grave 1.
Mrs. M.B. Willison (Find A Grave Memorial# 27954256) is in Ward A-OG, Square 151, so apparently George Walton Jr. should be buried in the NE corner of that plot without a marker.
