In Memory of Uncle Fred Walker
Fred E Walker was born on November 21st, 1841 at Flemingsburg, Kentucky, died at his home at Cleo on January 15th, 1908, of erysipelas of the face and throat, at the age of 66 years, 1 month and 14 days. Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church in this city on last Friday evening at 2 o'clock, Rev. Swartz conducting the services. Interment was made at the Cleo cemetery.
"Uncle Fred" as he was known by everyone, came to Oklahoma at the opening of the Cherokee Strip on September 16, 1893, settling just north of town on a claim. A few years ago he sold his farm and bought him a home in Cleo where he remained up to the time of his death. When a young man he left Kentucky and went west. He built the first house in Helena, Montana. In a few years he came back and settled in Iowa and on November 30th, 1867, he was married to Mary F. Ruby at Winterset, that state. The wife still survives him. In the year 1879 he left Iowa and moved with his family to Great Bend, Kansas, and continued to reside there until the opening of the Strip and then came to Oklahoma. The children born to this union are Lizzie W Booker, now deceased, Mr. L. L. Walker, of Wichta [sic] Kansas and Chas. E. Walker of this place. Uncle Fred was a life long member of the Methodist Church and was always on hands with his influence and money to aid in building up the church of his choice. He was a good citizen always standing for temperance, law and order in the comunity [sic] and in his death, not only the church, but the comunity loses a valued helper and citizen.
We join a legion of friends in extending sympathy to the wife and children left to mourn their loss.
