Peter was the second child of Michael and Catharina (Lenhard/Lehnert) Wagner who came to the U.S. from Germany abt 1847 with daughter Catherina (b. 16 Nov 1838), sons Peter, John (b. 24 June 1842) and Michael (b. Mar 1845) and settled in the Meeme area of Manitowoc County, where two more children were born: Conrad (b. 1847) and Elizabeth (b. abt 1853). Peter joined the Grand Army of the Republic on August 21, 1862 from Meeme and entered the 27th Regiment Infantry, Company D. He is said to have participated in Sherman's March to the Sea. His gravestone is marked by a metal star with the inscription "G.A.R." – Grand Army of the Republic. In 1868, he married Maria Anna Rebhahn at St. Wendel Catholic Church in Meeme. Their children were Michael (b. 1870), Rose b. 1871 (died in infancy), Maria Anna/Mary b. 1872, Conrad (b. 1874), Anna (b. 1876), Margaret (b. 1878), Katharina (b. 1880), Peter Jr. b. (1883), and Matthias (b. 1885). He was a farmer and took up a homestead in Green Valley in abt 1868.
