Douglas Sparr Vonada, 70, passed away Thursday August 4, 2005 at his State College home after a long battle with melanoma. Born April 27, 1935, he was the beloved son of Madalene Wert Vonada Haslop. On August 20, 1960, he married Delores Jean Quimby, who survives at home. He was preceded in death by his father, Phillip Vonada and his stepfather, Robert Haslop. Douglas grew up in State College, graduated from State College Area High School and the Williamsport Technical Institute. He spent his 35 year career at the Penn State Breazeale Nuclear Reactor. After his retirement from the University, he continued to work in the nuclear field with Netco of Kingston, New York, where he helped develop and implement a process to test nuclear reactors around the country for leaks in their storage pools. Douglas was a long-time member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Nittany Amateur Radio Club and the Old Fort Lodge No. 537, Free and Accepted Masons. Douglas' hobbies included remodeling homes along with his wife. He was frequently called upon to fix things for family and friends and to set up public address systems. Douglas had a lifelong passion for ham radio, photography (developing his own black and white photos), electronics, and for his cars. However, his greatest passion was for his family. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by two daughters, Deborah Suzanne Barger and her husband Scott, Deanna Vonada and her fiance David Flynn, all of State College. He is also survived by one grandson, Evan Barger, who was the joy of his life. Pivate service at the convenience of the family at St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Burial in Centre County Memorial Park. [Centre Daily]
