Mathilde Von Mevissen
Birth: Jul. 30, 1848
Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany
Death: Mar. 19, 1924
Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany

Women's Rights, Suffrage, and Education Advocate. Founding member of the "Vereins Mädchengymnasium" or Girls' Higher Education Association in Cologne and one of the 13 women (of 124 persons) honored by a sculpture on the Cologne City Hall. She was the daughter of Cologne banker and politician Gustav von Mevissen, who, though considered a liberal by the politics of the time, closely controlled his daughters' lives. Thus, never having married, she was not allowed to leave home unaccompanied. This motivated her work later in life, as she became her father's secretary in 1882 and managed his extensive library, which stimulated her intellectual curiosity. By the 1890s, she had become involved in women's rights issues. Upon her father's death in 1899, she devoted the rest of her life to better education and training for girls, starting by aiding in the founding of the "Vereins Mädchengymnasium" in 1899 to campaign for an education for women equivalent to that of the highest "Gymnasium" or college preparatory institution for men. The first such school opened in 1903, after much resistance from the German Ministry of Culture, supported in large part by her funds. The Verein then went on to promote higher education for women, as women were not allowed to study at a university until 1908. She helped in this endeavor not only through her work with the Verein but also by providing scholarships. She also assisted in the re-founding of the University of Cologne in 1919 with a particular emphasis on women students and was also involved in gaining the right to vote for women. During World War I, she assisted in caring for the wounded by donating a hospital train with her sister. The oldest primary school in the Cologne region bears her name.
