LOUIS T. VOIGT

LOUIS VOIGT, COUNTY BOARD MEMBER, DIES
Was Chairman of Town of Rockland; Served on Board For Nine Years
Chairman Louis T. Voigt, 70, of Rockland, veteran County Board member and
prominent banker and merchant in the village of Collins, died early today at
his home.
Mr. Voigt had been active in county and town affairs until Tuesday, Dec. 3,
when he was stricken with a heart ailment while attending a Rockland town
meeting. He was taken to his home but failed to rally.
Nine Years on Board
He served nine years on the County Board from Rockland and at the last session,
which closed two weeks ago at the court house, was a member of the Finance
Committee, the board’s most important group. For 35 years he had been active
in the business life of Collins, operating his own store and lumber yard and
heading the Collins State Bank.
Funeral arrangements have not been completed but services will probably be held
Saturday afternoon from the home in Collins. Members of the County Board will
act as honorary pallbearers.
Mr. Voigt was born in Schleswig in 1870 and was a lifelong resident of the
county. When a young man he learned the cheesemaking business and for years
operated a cheese factory in Schleswig.
Thirty-five years ago he moved to Collins where he established a general
mercantile store. He also embarked in the lumber business, opening a yard that
supplied the territory in the vicinity of Collins.
One of the organizers of the Collins State Bank, he served as a director and
in recent years has been president of the institution. He also served several
terms on the school board and was at one time a trustee of the St. Peters church,
near Collins.
He was a member of the Collins fire department from the time it was organized.
Widow Survives
Mr. Voigt was named chairman of Rockland in the spring of 1931 and has represented
his town on the County Board each succeeding year. In addition to membership on
the Finance Committee he was also on the Judiciary and Resolutions Committees.
Survivors are the widow, the former Ida Zorn, whom he married 45 years ago; two
sons, Elmer and Harvey of Collins; two daughters, Mrs. Walter Mahloch of this city,
and Mrs. Raymond Pankratz of Valders; four brothers, Theodore and Armie of Louis
Corners, William of Cleveland, August of Valders; sister, Mrs. Henry Schmidt of
Louis Corners; and 10 grandchildren.
The body was moved to the Meiselwitz funeral home at Kiel and later will be taken
to the Voigt home in Collins.
