John Marshall Vest was born in 1821 in Virginia, a son of Charles Vest and Elizabeth Via Vest, according to his death record. He married Adelphia Martin on 05 Aug 1839 in Patrick County, Va. (Virginia, Select Marriages, 1785-1940, FHL Film Number: 33351, Reference ID: 2-55) Mrs. Vest was a daughter of William Martin and Sarah Harris Martin, according to information on Find A Grave.

John, Adelphia and their children moved from Floyd County, Va., in about 1858 and settled on the top of White Oak Mountain, W.Va. ("The Life & Time of John Jackson Vest" by Benny D. "Ben" Vest, 04 July 1999.)

The 1870 and 1880 U.S. Census records show John, a farmer, and his family in the Jumping Branch District in West Virginia.

John and Adelphia Martin Vest left Summers County, W.Va., in 1885 to seek a better life in the "West." Two sons, James Jefferson Vest and Joshua Vest went along with them and settled in Nebraska.

John and Adelphia returned to West Virginia in about 1886. He died in 1899 in Summers County, W.Va. After her husband John's death, Adelphia returned to Nebraska where she died in 1914. Mrs. Vest is buried in the Fairmont Pioneer Cemetery in Buffalo County, Neb. (Find A Grave Memorial 29239672)
