Aviation Pioneer. Graduated from Purdue University; he was the first graduate to become an aviator. A member of the Wright brother's exhibition flying team which made its debut at the Indianapolis Speedway in June 1910. In 1911 Turpin established a new altitude record of 9,400 feet. A series of crashes killed all of the team members except Turpin and Walter Brookins. Turpin was seriously injured but survived a crash at Seattle on May 30, 1912 and continued to fly.
