U.S. Congressman. He attended Kinderhook Academy, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1840 and commenced to practice law in Durham, New York. He was elected supervisor of Durham, in 1842, appointed Durham District Attorney in 1844, served as surrogate judge of Greene County in 1846 and was the New York State Attorney General, in 1858. He also was a member of the New York State assembly, (1866-68) and elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress, serving (1873-75). Not seeking reelection, he retired from politics and returned to private legal practice until his death.
