Son of Joel and Miriam (Blakely) Thurston. Service during the Revolutionay War: enlisted 1778 under Capt. Tate for 1 mo. Enlisted again for 3 mos. under Capt. Roger Sutherland. Enlisted 1780, NY Levees for 9 mos. under Col. Spaulding, Capt. Levingston. Jason Thurston was one of the men to establish the first permanent settlement in what is now LaGrange county as early as 1828. He and Nathan Fowler initially shared a log cabin they built in what is now Lima township, on the banks of Crooked Creek.
