After a second uncredited, bit part she appeared in Sweedie Goes To College. She then married her first husband, Wallace Beery and moved to Los Angeles where she appeared in hit after hit such as Pullman Bride, Shifting Sands and Don't Change Your Husband. She adapted well when "talkies" appeared on the scene and proved it when in 1928 she received a Best Actress Academy Award nomination for her role in Sadie Thompson in the film of the same name. The following year history repeated itself with the same nomination in The Trespasser. Both times she lost to other actresses. After making Father Takes A Wife she took a hiatus and returned in 1950 to star as Norma Desmond in the classic "Sunset Boulevard." This brought her the third Academy Award nomination for Best Actress and her third loss. The last movie she was to appear in was Airport 1975 in which she played herself.
