My precious mother Born August 6, 1917 Pauline was a daughter of James Frederick and Martha Jane Merriott Caldwell, and the wife of Marve L. Strouss. Mom and Dad were married January 28, 1945 in Chula Vista, California. She and dad were married for 52 years short of a few weeks when mom left this world to be with Jesus. Their love was sweet, strong and sure.

We lived in California, Florida, and then moved to Michigan settling in Monroe, Michigan in 1971. Mom became a member of the Victory Temple Church of God. She lived for the Lord with all her heart, mind, body, and soul. Mom went to nursing homes, and to the hospital and prayed for the people. Mom attended church every service until she could no longer walk. Look at her beautiful dark hair, she never dyed it one time in her life. I wish I had clipped a small piece of her hair when she left this world.

As a child I saw her on her knees praying every day. Mom and dad took me in when I was 8 years and 4 months old. I left behind my sister and brothers to be adopted and be with mom and dad. They wanted my sister but she did not want to be told what to do. After we left Michigan they never told anyone that they adopted me. Mom later helped me to find my people when I was 16. I know how worried she must have been that I might love her less. I loved mom even more because she helped me.

My precious mama always had a smile on her face and a kind word to everyone. She loved to cook, sew, and hook hooked rug pictures. Mom won many blue and gold ribbons on them. Mom also loved to sell jewelry at flea markets. I think she most liked it because she loved to be with people. Mom wanted a large family but that was not to be.

One day the most precious woman in the world was stricken with cancer. Mom was able to beat it with surgery, prayers, and radiation treatments. For the time being I still had my mother. Then mom got progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP)a rare form of Parkinsons, and Alzheimer's Disease. I asked her did she ever blame God and she told me "No never, because He has been so good to me". Mom said she would always trust Him that He had never let her down but had carried her through the hard times in life.

A few days before Christmas mom got pneumonia and congestive heart failure. At 8:55 p.m. on New Years day 1997 my mother, my best friend, and my heart were all gone. Shattered glass now fills the place where my heart used to be. I had just wet mom's tongue, cut her fingernails, and brushed her hair, anything to be touching her and letting her feel my love.

My husband Clair was at my side as he loved my parents as his own. My dad had stepped out of the room for a few minutes, he came in right after mom left this world to be with Jesus. He kept saying it must be a mistake she must still be alive. My dad had never cried so hard in all his life, he said losing mom was worse than anything he went through in World War II and even the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Oh dear God, how it hurts so much to not have my dearest friend, my precious mother. The mother who loved me, never drank, smoked, cussed, nor ever raised her voice or hand against me in anger. She was a precious, wonderful, loving mother and I miss her so much.

My heart has been shattered and life will never be the same without this gentle woman. Yet I strive to go on since my mother asked me to try to be happy after I had grieved for her for a little while. Time will never erase the pain but knowing mom is waiting in Heaven makes me keep living, loving, and trusting on.

At the time of Mom's death my dad Marve Strouss of Monroe, MI was still alive. They only had one living daughter together and that was me. Mrs. Clair (Patty "Ann") Howard. As were 2 sisters Vivian Huchingson of Hot Springs, Ark., and Cris Mayo of Los Angeles, also her brother George Caldwell of Cottonwood, Ariz., also 2 grandchildren James and Paula of Monroe, Michigan, and 2 step grandchildren Holly and Jody of Monroe, MI.

Just before mom left this world she said she would not live to see Paula's baby that was due the first week of January. On Jan. 7, 2007 her great grandchild Sara was born. Then came mom's two other great grandchildren Bethann born to Paula, and Wesley was born to my son. I know my mom could see them looking down from Heaven. Perhaps she saw them in Heaven before they came down. Mom adored her grandchildren and I know she would have loved their children.

My mom also loved my furbabies
My miniature Schnauzer Snookie 1994-2004
Our Chihuahua Chili Bean 1994-2004 We just lost our Cat Amber Dec. 7, 1995-April 17, 2011 We lost our Quaker parrot Chico June 21, 2011. We lost our cat Cinny Sep. 14, 2011. Mom did not know Chico or Cinny but I bet she is taking care of them for me now.

On Mom's first death anniversary dad wanted me to write a poem for the Newspaper. Here it is:
Precious wife and mother one year ago on New Years Day
God sent His angels to carry you home to stay.
Our hearts are broken for we will see you no more
until we walk hand in hand on Heaven's Golden Shore.
