ARTHUR G. STRONKS

Crushed Between Engines, Worker Injured Fatally
Veteran Railroad Employe Was Due to Retire Monday
Arthur G. Stronks, 64, of 2705 Clark St., at work in the Calumet yards of the
North Western railroad Saturday afternoon-his last day before retiring Monday—
was fatally injured when crushed between two locomotives.
Mr. Stronks, according to Agent Jess Hamilton of the railroad, was riding on
the steps of a diesel engine, as a train pilot, his hands clasped to the
grabirons, as the freight train was being maneuvered around the Y turn. Another
engine was on the fuel spur and as the disesel passed this engine Mr. Stronks
was crushed between the two engines.
Mr. Stronks complained about pains in his chest, and was moved to Holy Family
Hospital by police ambulance. His family was called to the hospital and the
injured man talked to them, but died three hours after the accident. His death
occurred at 6:50 p.m.
Mishap is Probed
Officials of the railroad were here Sunday to investigate the accident, and
train crews reenacted what had happened Saturday afternoon.
Mr. Stronks, who would have been 65 years of age on Aug. 27, planned to leave
Monday on a vacation before applying for his retirement. He had only two hours
to work before the accident happened.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Pfeffer Funeral home with
the Rev. A. C. Fischer of First Reformed Church officiating. Burial will be in
Evergreen Cemetery.
Mr. Stronks, the son of John Stronks and Anna Earnessess, was born in Milwaukee,
in 1887. He married in Milwaukee and came to Manitowoc in 1923. His wife is the
former Pauline Eickwald.
Employed 30 Years
For 30 years he was an employe of the Chicago and North Western, and previous
to joining the company worked for the Milwaukee Road for 15 years.
He was a World War I veteran, having served as a brakeman with the 31st engineer
corps. He was affiliated with the Manitowoc Eagles aerie, and the Brotherhood of
Railroad Trainmen.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary will hold memorial services at 7 o’clock
Monday evening at the funeral home, and friends may call during the afternoon
and evening.
He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Albert Gates of Two Rivers and
Mrs. Laurance Kujava of Green Bay; two brothers, Elmer and Clarence Stronks, of
Milwaukee; two sisters, Mrs. William Lauson and Mrs. Jack Dix of Milwaukee. Four
grandchildren and 1 great grandchild also survive.
