Mr. Stinson enrolled in Erskine College in 1938 and graduated in 1942 with degrees in history and economics. In 1942 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and on June 6, 1944, he was among the fateful group that landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy. Mr. Stinson was a member of the Company G, 38th Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was the owner and operator of Stinson Furniture since 1949. He joined the American Legion upon moving to Hamlet in 1949 and quickly became a devoted follower of Legion Baseball. Mr. Stinson was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon and elder.
Mr. Stinson was a devoted family man who deeply loved his wife of 58 years, Jean, their three children and six grandchildren. His array of life experiences made him a valued mentor to his loved ones. The Hamlet community will always remember him as champion of the common man who gave liberally of his time and resources to assist those in need.

Mr. Stinson received the Purple Heart, four Bronze Stars, Presidential Citation Unit badge, and the Combat Infantryman badge. He received a medical discharge in August 1945.
