Louis C. was the seventh of nine children (four sons & five daughters) born to Wenzel M. & Catherine "Katie" (Prausa) Stangel.

"Louis C. Stangel of 915 N. 13th St., retired businessman, died Wednesday morning at home. He was born at Tisch Mills, son of the late Wenzel and Catherine Prausa Stangel.

"He married Vera Zachek at Ladysmith June 25, 1925, and the couple located at Manitowoc immediately after marriage. He was former head of the retail sales and sporting goods division of the J.J. Stangel Hardware Co. and in 1940 opened his own sporting goods shop on Franklin Street, and in late 1948 bought out the Lyons Sports Shop on Washington Street. In October, 1953, he closed the Washington Street store and consolidated the stock in his store which in 1960 was purchased by Anton R. Elliott. In recent years, he was merchandise manager at Napp Office & School Supply.

"He was a member of the third and fourth degree Knights of Columbus, Holy Name Society and Elks Lodge No. 687. He was active in the cancer and heart association campaigns for which he received innumerable citations and had been a member of the Lions Club.

"Survivors include the wife; a daughter, (private); three sisters, Sister M. Wencela of West Point, Neb., Mrs. William Leahy of Sauk City, Wis., and Mrs. Jack Berg of Milwaukee; two brothers, Ben and Richard of Two Rivers; and three grandchildren. Two sisters and a brother preceded him in death."
