(from Rita Stange)

Peter Stange is my great, great grandfather's grandpa. He was born on November 10, 1827 in Holstein, Germany.
Peter's mother was born in Prussia as was his father. Both of his parents spoke German so that was also his native language. Peter grew up there and moved to America in his mid-twenties.
Peter was only 26 when he arrived in America on September 28, 1854. He came on the ship, Tarquin, which deported Hamburg, Germany and arrived in New York. Around 1860 he resided in Grafton, Wisconsin. His estate he owned was worth about $800.
Peter married Maria Sloeter who was born in Mecklenburg, Germany around 1837. Both of her parents were also born in Mecklenburg.
Peter and Mary resided in Wisconsin the rest of their lives. They lived in Schleswig around 1870 which is located in Manitowoc County. Peter owned a farm and was a farmer his entire life.
They had 7 children who were all born in Wisconsin. Their first child, Mary was born in 1857. Next they had daughter Dorothea. Four years later they had Fredrich, their first son. Then they had William, in 1864. After William was my great, great grandfathers dad, Henry who was born in 1866. Then they had Sophie in 1869. Last was Otto who was born in 1871. All of their children were raised on their farm.
His first daughter, Mary had a total of 10 children died in 1936. Another daughter, Sophia passed away in 1931.
Peter died at age 72 on December 9, 1898 of diabetes. He died on his farm near Rockville, Wisconsin. Peter's wife, Mary survived until August, 1 1917. She died from natural causes.
