George Spangler was either the biological son of Hans George Spangler [Spengler], born after his father's death in 1744, or was an orphan adopted by his widowed mother, Catherine Laub-Spengler. George went by the names George Spangler and George Laub in various records. During the occupation of Philadelphia in 1777, George aided the British, primarily as a guide. In 1778, he was tried for treason, found guilty and executed on the Commons at Philadelphia. He left behind a wife, Anna Maria Schoener-Spangler, and two young children, Catherine and George. Because of the circumstances of their father's death, his children took the surname Leaf [the English translation of the surname Laub], and subsequent generations retained that name.
