CAPT. SNIFFEN DIES MONDAY IN MANITOWOC
Captain Berlin M. Sniffen, for 15 years with the Goodrich company, died at Manitowoc yesterday after a years illness. Captain Sniffen was born at Morrison, Brown county, Dec. 22, 1856.
During his long career as lake captain, Sniffen commanded the "Virginia", "Georgia", "Sheboygan" and the "Chicago", and for the past few years was in command of the "Arctic". He has made the port of Sheboygan many a time, and there are doubtless many Sheboyganites who remember him.
Captain Sniffen went to Manitowoc while still a boy and attended the schools there. At an early age, he started his career as a sailor, shipping in summer and going to school in winter. Before joining the Goodrich line, he was employed by the I.O.C.T. company, and later sailed the tug "Delta".
The departed captain is survived by his widow and one daughter, Carrie, one sister, Mrs. I. C. Woods, and two brothers, Royal and Byron, all of Manitowoc. The funeral will take place Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, from the home.

Veteran Lake Captain Gets Call to Make Last Voyage and Crosses Dark Sea with
Death as Pilot-Was 59
Capt. Berlin M. Sniffin, veteran sailor of the lakes, has made his last voyage,
embarking to cross the dark sea Sunday night, with Death as the pilot. Capt.
Sniffins(sic) died after an illness of more than a year.
Capt. Sniffin had been with the Goodrich company during the past fifteen years,
having commanded the Virginia, Georgia, Sheboygan and the Chicago and the past
few years, at his own request, having been in command of the Arctic. Bl?e?s
forced Capt. Sniffin to retire in May.
Born at Morrison, Brown county Dec. 22, 1856, Captain Sniffin was 59 years of
age. He came to this city as a boy of four and at the age of 11 started his
career on the lakes, sailing in summer and attending school in winter.
For ten years he was with the I.O.C.T. company and sailed the Minnesota of
that line. Later he sailed the Delta of Escanaba and then entered employ of
the Goodrich company. He was widely known and was universally esteemed.
Capt. Sniffin is survived by his widow and one daughter, Carrie, two brothers,
Royal and Byron and one sister, of this city.
The funeral will be held from the home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
