Jesse Yost Smith was the son of Adam Smith 1835-1877 and Mary Ann 'Polly' Shoemaker Smith. He was born in Red Bank Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania.

Jesse's grandfather, Philip Shoemaker 1784-1860 lived in Westmoreland County, Pa until 1814 when he bought 400 acres in the town of Distant, Pa., (this was formerly named Texas but changed to Oakland in 1854).

Jesse's grandmother was Elizabeth Rose Shoemaker 1790-1863. Jesse's great grandparents were John Shoemaker 1759-1815 and Mary Ann Baker Shoemaker 1757-1844. John came from the vicinity of Lovettsville, Loudoun County, Virginia,
John's father, Philip was born in Germany.

Jesse Yost died in 1882 as a result of a wound received in the Civil War. He moved West, leaving the majority of his family in Pennsylvania and engaged in farming at Potwin, Kansas. Jesse Yost and his wife, Sarepta are both buried at Pleasant Center, which is nine miles northeast of Potwin, Kansas.
