George Edward Smith, age 78, died April 11, 2010, at the Georgia War Veterans Home in Milledgeville, after an extended illness. He was a native of Fulton County. In his younger years, he was a Boy Scout and later became a Troop Leader. After graduating from Lyons High School, he attended Business College in Brunwick, for two years, and then attended Brewton Parker College, for two years. He then went to work with his father at City Tire and Battery Shop and remained there until he was called into the ministry and went to Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and became ordained into the ministry in 1966. He then went to Altha Vista, Virginia, in ministry for a short period of time before he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was a very loving person setting a good example, and was an active member of Lyons First Baptist Church. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents George Glenn and Ida Elizabeth Thompson Smith. Survivors include 2 sisters Mrs. Jerry McRae of Lyons, and Mrs. Jackie Yarbrough of Guthrie Oklahoma, 1 nephew John McRae of Lyons, and 2 nieces Billie Jeanne Everett and Cheryl Downs both of Oklahoma. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral Service for Mr. George Smith will be held Thursday, April 15, at 2:30 pm from First Baptist Church of Lyons with Reverend Dannie Williams officiating. Interment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Gardens. Visitations will be from 12:00 until 2:00 pm prior to the service.
