Served in the Civil War first as Major and Provost Marshal on the staff of Brigadier General Absalom Baird, then as Provost Marshal on the staff of Brigadier General James B. Steedman, then finally as Lieutenant Colonel of the 96th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on June 20, 1865 for "meritorious services". After the end of the conflict he served as Illinois State Treasurer from 1870 to 1881 and from 1883 to 1885, and as Illinois' Lieutenant Governor from 1885 to 1889.
